Dimensional Fund Advisors hit a milestone in January, less than 18 months after the launch of its separately managed accounts platform. The new SMA project surpassed $1 billion in assets under management. Savina Rizova, global head of research for Austin, Texas–based Dimensional, says that it’s her “mission” to educate financial advisors about how SMAs can generate “better after-tax returns” for clients.

The launch of Dimensional’s SMA Center expanded access to SMAs to investors with as little as $500,000 in assets, down from its prior floor of $20 million.

Last year, Rizova wrote a paper about the tax-management benefits of SMAs, saying that in addition to tax-loss harvesting, “you can do a lot in terms of how you design the portfolio and how you manage it daily” to enhance returns.

While visiting family in her native Bulgaria last summer, Rizova says it was “heartbreaking” to see so many Ukrainian refugees. “It makes me very sad,” says Rizova, 41, who lived under communism as a child. “Lots of moms with kids, and the dads are over there fighting, if still alive. I’m hoping that the war will end soon and Russia will leave Ukraine.”
